The Big Issue 2019 and Beyond

Low Speed Pre-Ignition

LSPI damage in gasoline direct fuel injected engines when not using AMSOIL
Example of piston damage due to an LSPI event observed during the testing of a competitor’s motor oil. The red arrows indicate sections of the ring land that have broken away from the piston.

Next gen engines squeezing out additional mileage and power put new demands on the motor oil. The wrong oil under such high compression before the fuel is injected is causing detonation at the piston ring.  At the time of this posting, none of the common “fully synthetic” brands can prevent this to a reasonable level, in fact to pass the current test one can have 5 damaging pre-ignition events and still pass. AMSOIL’s 100% synthetic motor oils pass 100% and should be the only choice in all DFI and TGDI engines.

OE, XL and Signature Series Offer Excellent Wear Protection

The protection the oil delivers is even different, as in better. The added protection is particularly important in the extreme environments produced by today’s smaller displacement engines that often run lower viscosity oil.
Camshaft wear, for example, can result in poor valve timing, greatly reducing engine efficiency and leading to expensive repairs. The Peugeot TU3M Wear Test (CEC L-38-A-94), which must be passed to meet the GM dexos1® Gen 2 specification, determines a motor oil’s ability to limit wear. For 100 hours the four-cylinder test engine is subjected to extreme, wear-inducing conditions.

Cam Wear Test Data
AMSOIL OE Motor Oil provided 47 percent more wear protection* than required by the GM dexos1 Gen 2 specification.

Fights LSPI

Just one of several aspects where AMSOIL offers protection beyond what is required. (Their devotion to the enthusiast segment)

OE Synthetic Motor Oil (the lower priced AMSOIL choice and several dollars less per quart than the “so called synthetic Mobil 2)  features unique chemistry proven to protect your engine against the harmful effects of LSPI – the spontaneous ignition of the fuel/air mixture prior to spark-triggered ignition. Most new engines feature gasoline direct injection (GDI), often coupled with a turbocharger. These technologies heighten the possibility of LSPI events, which can destroy pistons and connecting rods. A properly formulated motor oil is critical for protecting your engine against LSPI.

Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) like GM have addressed the issue by designing tests to determine a motor oil’s ability to prevent LSPI. OE Synthetic Motor Oil achieved 100 percent protection against LSPI** in the engine test required by the GM dexos1 Gen 2 specification – zero occurrences were recorded throughout five consecutive tests.

Keeps Engines Clean

Everyone likes a clean engine, especially the inside. OE Synthetic Motor Oil naturally resists chemical breakdown to help prevent deposits. Its detergent and dispersant additives give OE excellent sludge- and deposit-fighting properties. OE Synthetic Motor Oil helps keep your engine clean, reliable and running at peak performance.

Who’s it for?

If Signature Series is for enthusiasts who demand the best engine protection available and XL Synthetic Motor Oil is for those who want to do a little something extra for their vehicles, who’s OE for?

It’s for drivers who want peace-of-mind protection combined with excellent value from a full synthetic oil. Some motorists aren’t ready to spend nearly $10 per quart or to extend their drain intervals to one year. We get that. But they still want excellent protection combined with a price they’re accustomed to paying.

If that’s you, OE Synthetic Motor Oil is the perfect fit. It offers everything you want in a high-quality synthetic at a price and drain interval that fits your lifestyle.

Local note – Before any of the additives begin to wear out our competitors product is already sheered out meaning their viscosity has changed enough to be out of grade thus you notice that change in overall oil pressure. And this is why people don’t feel comfortable going long intervals as this is the standard. No regulation in this industry so you just don’t know who to trust. AMSOIL is a company of enthusiasts who design oils for their own needs and as that happens they push the limits because the focus is not on holding down a cost. It’s trying to do what hasn’t been done before.

“Three primary factors are normally responsible for oil failure”

Oil that becomes too thin, too thick, or too acidic has exceeded its useful life.

Dan Peterson's Tech ArticleBecause they work to suspend contaminants and by-products of combustion, it is not uncommon for gasoline and diesel oils to become dark. It may be more noticeable in some applications. It does not mean the oil is failing or must be changed.
Fortunately, a number of different tools are available that measure motor oil’s condition and its ability to continuously protect and perform its other key functions.
When motor oil exceeds its useful life or is impacted by a mechanical defect, it most commonly becomes too thin to separate metal parts, too thick to pump or too acidic for continued use.

Too Thin
When oil becomes too thin, it fails to provide the required oil film thickness to
separate metal surfaces. Different engine designs require different starting oil thickness
or viscosity. Viscosity at 100 °C is one of the most highlighted oil properties and is a good indicator of adequate oil film thickness in an engine at operating temperature.

A number of things can cause engine oil to become too thin to protect engine
parts. Excessive mechanical shear can thin oil to the point of causing issues with
engine protection. As motor oil cycles through the engine, it is exposed to shear stress in the engine’s upper end, piston walls and bearings that reduces its shear strength. Continuous exposure to these conditions causes oils built with inferior shear stability to thin excessively, leaving critical engine parts susceptible to metal to metal contact.

Fuel contamination of the oil sump is another major cause of excessively thin engine oil. Both gasoline and diesel fuel are thinner than engine oil and when mixed, the oil’s viscosity, film thickness and ability to separate parts are significantly reduced. While a small amount of fuel dilution is relatively common and does not have a material impact on oil life, excessive fuel dilution in mechanically compromised equipment is much
more harmful.

Too Thick
When it comes to oil, although it may seem like “the thicker, the better,” oil that is too thick is just as detrimental as oil that is too thin. Excessively thick oil is the most commonly discussed oil failure and the subject of many big oil company marketing campaigns.
When oil becomes too thick to flow to engine parts, these areas are starved of
oil, resulting in metal-to-metal contact that can lead to catastrophic engine damage.
The precursor to sludge is oil that has become much thicker than its original
design. The cause is a complex chemical reaction involving heat, combustion byproducts
and oxygen combining to create chemical attack on the oil molecules. The resulting chemical reaction creates a much thicker substance that does not flow or protect as well as the original oil. When the reaction continues, sludge begins to form in areas of higher localized temperature and low flow. While some varnish is normal, sludge is a sign of excessively degraded oil that needs to be replaced. In order to inhibit sludge and varnish, the oil must resist attack by oxidation forces. Synthetic base oils have a much higher
level of saturated molecules that inherently resist this constant bombardment. Additionally, antioxidants are added to either reduce the formation of free-radical oxidation precursors or soak up these precursors once they form.

Another cause of oil thickening, primarily affecting diesel oils, is excessive soot loading
in mechanically unsound engines. Diesel oils are designed to handle some soot contamination, but when the soot overloads the available dispersants in the oil, the oil thickens. The agglomerated soot particles reach a critical size and cause excessive wear commonly seen in diesel liners.

Too Acidic
Acids are a normal by-product of burning fossil fuels. Different fuel types, engines and combustion conditions create varying levels of acid formation. These acids, transferred via blow-by gases, are carried away to the engine oil. Oils are designed with a detergent that neutralizes these acids before they accumulate and cause engine damage. The detergent level is measured with a test called Total Base Number (TBN). This measure of alkalinity drops over the life of the oil and reaches a critical level when the oil can no longer consume the acids created by combustion. When TBN reaches a critical level,
acids build up quickly and attack the surfaces most susceptible, including yellow
metals and lead-lined bearings. Without correction, this condition quickly worsens
and results in excessive chemical wear. Although less common, this failure mode
can cause significant damage if left uncorrected.

AMSOIL synthetic motor oils are formulated to provide a broad level of overall protection, evidenced by guaranteed
extended drain intervals. Synthetic base oils help resist oxidative decomposition,
and a properly balanced, high-quality additive package helps keep contaminants
in check and engines running for a long time.

No longer settle for the typical quick lube oil change with no wear protection, Results in no added performance, poor cold weather flow properties, winter stress, leaves deposits, totally lacking any quality control in the vat (you don’t even know what really is in there), and does nothing to extend life to your vehicle. AMSOIL’s wear protection earns us customers for one major reason – noticeable performance.

Try our Small Engine Synthetic Oil from AMSOIL

AMSOIL’s ASE Commercial Grade 100% Synthetic 10W30/.SAE-30 has become my favorite product to sell here locally to homeowners here in Pittsburgh.
Number one, the original design feature was extended engine life and high temperature performance but it’s now selling just fine due to the fuel consumption reduction.

But here are some other reasons to consider using it in all your hard working motors now:

MANUFACTURERS POSITION: Briggs and Stratton owners manual quote:

* “Air cooled engines run hotter than automotive engines.  The use of  non-synthetic multi-viscosity oils (5W-30, 10W-30, etc.) in temperatures above 40°  F (4° C) will result in higher than normal oil consumption.”

See for yourself!
small engine oilIt is formulated with premium synthetic base oils that exceed both 10W-30 multi-grade and SAE 30 straight-grade viscosity requirements. Unlike conventional SAE 30 motor oils, AMSOIL ASE has a naturally high viscosity index and does not contain paraffin (wax). It has a -38°F pour point and qualifies for SAE 10W, making it an “all season,” multi-grade lubricant with a wide operating temperature range. Reduces wear an average of 45% meaning you keep your engine in operation for years beyond what you would expect using OEM recommended oils.

Resists Heat and Reduces Oil Consumption
AMSOIL engineered Formula 4-Stroke® Small Engine Oil to withstand the high temperatures of hard working diesel and gas engines. It effectively resists oxidation and oil vaporization to control oil thickening (88% less) and reduce oil consumption (65% less). AMSOIL ASE lasts longer in service than conventional oils and keeps engines clean for peak operating efficiency.

Use AMSOIL ASE in your small garden equipment, commercial engines, generators and snow removal tools.Excellent For Transmission Systems
AMSOIL Formula 4-Stroke® Small Engine Oil is a shear stable formulation that contains no friction modifiers. It will not break down during rigorous mechanical activity, making it ideal for hydraulic or hydrostatic systems and chain cases. It is wet clutch compatible and designed to prevent clutch slippage in commercial or recreational transmissions. AMSOIL Formula 4-Stroke® Small Engine Oil protects gears and bearings during high-demand, commercial duty service.

Don’t discount the quality of the fuel in your small engines. We know ethanol is not escapable in the Pittsburgh-Allegheny area. Ethanol really puts the stress on small engines and small fuel tanks because of “Phasing” which causes water to separate out of the fuel eventually causing a lean condition which is keeping small engine shops in the Pitts Metro area busy. Also you want to remove deposits in both small 2 and 4 stroke engines. AMSOIL has a new product which made SEMA product of the year for 2010 – Called Quickshot SE.

Amsoil QuickshotCheck it our and call us to test for yourself. Motorcyclists are responding with testimonials of improved mileage of up to 20 more miles per tank!

A car’s engine needs oil to run without damage. Let the oil run out, the engine seizes
and you’re looking at a complete rebuild or buying a new engine. AMSOIL Dealer Mark Corey of Olathe, Kan. discovered, along with one of his customers that AMSOIL synthetic oil has changed the rules about oil and engines. As Corey tells it, AMSOIL retail customer Rob Barrette of Overland Park, Kan. ran over a metal and concrete protrusion with his 2000 Volkswagen Jetta TDI.

“It was late at night and he thought things were OK after the impact,” Corey said. “The
next morning Rob unknowingly drove his car more than 10 miles without oil in the crankcase and the oil pressure light on. “When he got home he called me to ask if the light being on was a bad thing. I told him that driving any distance with the oil pressure light on was bad.” Corey had serviced the car in October 2007 with AMSOIL Synthetic 5W-40 European Engine Oil (AFL), which was in the crankcase for a little more than 6,800 miles. “I told Rob that I would pull the old pan and inspect for damage,” Corey said. “The odometer read 141,718 miles. The pan sounded hollow, and the last few ounces of oil were dripping out of the cracked aluminum oil pan.
I let Rob know of the grim possibilities of a burned-up engine and turbocharger.”
Offering some hope for this bleak picture, Corey told Barrette stories of others who had been running AMSOIL in their vehicles and lost the oil while driving.
The crack that likely appeared the night before had become bigger with the vibration of driving that morning.
“Expecting the worst, I pulled the pan and checked thoroughly,” Corey said. “I felt it was a gamble as I installed a new oil pan and fresh AMSOIL.”
After the pan gasket sealer had some time to cure,
Corey started the car. “The little VW diesel ran as quietly and smoothly as
ever,” he said. “After a 20-mile test drive, I had Rob drive back to his house. I told him how lucky he was.
“A couple of weeks later, Rob brought the car by to have me check it. I pulled the dipstick out and the oil was full and looked great. Rob’s mom had acquired this
car one year earlier as a very well-maintained cream puff from a meticulous owner. The 142,000-mile engine was still in near-perfect condition.”
